چکیده

Essential hypertension remains poorly understood, despite the enormous efforts of research, which brought understanding of certain physiopathological and treat ment mechanisms. New insights have emerged from recent data showing that environmental insults during (in vitro) fertilisation, foetal, perinatal and childhood periods may lead to vascular dysfunction and hyper tension later in life (the foetal programming of adult disease hypothesis, also called the “Barker hypothe sis”). In line with this hypothesis, we recently reported that apparently young healthy children born after a pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia or born after in vitro fertilisation display a marked generalised vas cular dysfunction, which may predispose them to pre mature cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. New data from animal studies strongly suggest that epi genetic alterations are important underpinning mech anisms involved in these vascular abnormalities. Pre liminary animal data suggest that pharmacological interventions targeted at these epigenetic modifica tions may avoid premature cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

The function of epigenetic processes in multiple sclerosis: review article

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological and inflammatory disorder that affects the nervous system. The etiology of MS is unknown, but genetic and environmental factors are involved in its pathogenesis. There is increasing evidence suggesting the role of epigenetic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. Lack of vitamin D, smoking, and Epstein barr virus can cause epigene...

DNA Methylation and Its Role in the Development of Leukemia

Epigenetic changes play an essential role in cancer pathogenesis. It has been established by next-generation sequencing that more than 50% of the human cancers carry mutations in mechanisms involved in the organization of the chromatin and epigenetic regulations. DNA methylation is among the most common epigenetic changes in leukemia. In contrast to DNA mutations which are passively inherited f...

Effects of Major Epigenetic Factors on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

The pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is influenced by both genetic factors and epigenetic modifications; the latter is a result of exposure to various environmental factors. Epigenetic modifications affect gene expression and alter cellular functions without modifying the genomic sequences. CpG-DNA methylation, histone modifications, and miRNAs are the main epigenetic factors ...

Fetal programming and epigenetic mechanisms in arterial hypertension.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW To provide an overview of available evidence of the potential role of epigenetics in the pathogenesis of hypertension and vascular dysfunction. RECENT FINDINGS Arterial hypertension is a highly heritable condition. Surprisingly, however, genetic variants only explain a tiny fraction of the phenotypic variation and the term 'missing heritability' has been coined to describe t...

Crocin prevents acute angiotensin II-induced hypertension in anesthetized rats

Objective: Angiotensin II (Ang II), the main product of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has a well-known role in cardiovascular regulation. Over-production of Ang II is one of the important underlying mechanisms of hypertension. In this study, the effect of crocin on cardiovascular responses in rats with acute hypertension induced by Ang II was evaluated. Materials and methods: Rats were divided...
